Appliance repair glossary
These terms help with manuals and technician conversations. Definitions are user-oriented and do not replace model-specific documentation.
Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.
Components and phenomena
- Rating plate — label with model, product number, serial number and ratings.
- RCD/GFCI — protection that reacts to conditions including leakage current.
- Drain pump — component removing water from a washer or dishwasher.
- Thermostat / temperature sensor — component communicating or limiting temperature.
Codes and diagnosis
- Error code — controller message about a detected condition, not a certain part diagnosis.
- Service mode — manufacturer procedure function; do not start without the correct instructions.
- Continuity test — electrical measurement requiring disconnection and competence; not a normal user task.
Repair
- OEM part — part supplied to the appliance manufacturer's specification.
- Refurbished part — used component restored to operation; the refurbishment scope should be described.
- Labour — cost of technician time and work, separate from part price.
