How to assess appliance repair costs

The full repair price should be known before approval. Separate diagnosis from labour and parts, and agree a limit requiring renewed consent.

Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.

Price components

  • Travel and diagnosis.
  • Labour, parts, materials and post-repair testing.
  • Transport, removal from fitted cabinetry and refitting.
  • Service warranty and possible disposal.

Quote red flags

  • No maximum-cost information.
  • Replacement of many parts without explaining measurements.
  • Demand for full payment without documentation or work description.

Better comparison

  • Ask for alternatives when new and refurbished parts are possible.
  • Compare with an appliance of similar capacity and features.
  • Include age, previous repairs and parts availability.
