Safe appliance troubleshooting step by step

Safe troubleshooting starts by recognising hazards and only then looking for a cause. Sometimes the most valuable result is the decision not to power the appliance again.

Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.

Before touching the appliance

  1. Make sure the floor and your hands are dry.
  2. Do not move equipment when the cable, socket or water creates doubt.
  3. Record the code and photograph the symptom without approaching a hazard.

Checks without disassembly

  1. Settings, control locks and selected programme.
  2. Filters, containers and hoses clearly described by the manufacturer as user-accessible.
  3. Ventilation conditions, levelling and door closure.

When to stop

  1. When smoke, sparking, a burning smell or electric shock appears.
  2. When a leak approaches power or the appliance trips protection.
  3. When the next step requires removing a cover, electrical measurement, gas work or refrigerant work.
