When to unplug an appliance immediately

Not every problem requires immediate disconnection, but electrical signals, fire, gas and water near power are not situations for further testing.

Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.

Electrical signs

  1. Sparks, arcing, melted plastic or a hot plug.
  2. Tingling when touching the cabinet.
  3. Repeated circuit breaker or RCD trips.

Smoke, smell and heat

  1. Smoke or a sharp electrical burning smell.
  2. Unexpectedly hot casing in an area not designed to heat.
  3. Fire: do not use water on electrical equipment and call emergency help.

Water and gas

  1. Active water leak near a socket or cable.
  2. Suspected gas: do not operate electrical switches, ventilate and follow local emergency guidance.
  3. Do not reach for a plug while standing in water.
