When to unplug an appliance immediately
Not every problem requires immediate disconnection, but electrical signals, fire, gas and water near power are not situations for further testing.
Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.
Electrical signs
- Sparks, arcing, melted plastic or a hot plug.
- Tingling when touching the cabinet.
- Repeated circuit breaker or RCD trips.
Smoke, smell and heat
- Smoke or a sharp electrical burning smell.
- Unexpectedly hot casing in an area not designed to heat.
- Fire: do not use water on electrical equipment and call emergency help.
Water and gas
- Active water leak near a socket or cable.
- Suspected gas: do not operate electrical switches, ventilate and follow local emergency guidance.
- Do not reach for a plug while standing in water.
