Washing machine — symptoms, diagnosis and maintenance

A washing machine combines water inlet and drainage, drum drive, heating and a door lock. The same symptom can therefore come from settings, a blockage or a component requiring measurements.

Safety rule: stop when there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, electric-shock signs, an active leak, cracked hob glass or suspected gas. Disconnect only when it is safe to do so.

Common symptoms

What to check before reporting

  • Pump filter and visible drain hose
  • Load balance and appliance stability
  • Error message before restarting

Maintenance

Clean the pump filter every 1–3 months and leave the door ajar after a cycle.

Use the frequency stated in the specific model manual. Heavy use may require more frequent maintenance.

How to approach washing machine diagnosis

  1. Record the full model and error code.
  2. Identify the cycle stage or condition when it occurs.
  3. Check only items the manual identifies as user-accessible.
  4. Do not restart after a hazard signal.
  5. Prepare the description and previous costs before a repair decision.
